Herman Gustave Herkomer (1863-1935), portrait of 'Arthur Henry Sykes, son of Richard Sykes, b.10 Jan. 1841, d.16 Jan 1926.', oil on canvas, signed and dated '94 lower right, 125 x 100cm

Provenance: by direct descent through the family

Son of Richard Sykes and Jane Hardcastle Sykes. Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. of Cheshire, 3rd generation Sykes to be Mayor of Stockport; J.P. for Shropshire.
He jointly ran the family business The Sykes Bleaching Works founded in 1793 leaving it after its centenary to his brother Thomas Hardcastle Sykes and moved from Edgeley to Lydham Manor near Bishops Castle. He created a thriving estate greatly benefiting the local community as well as supporting the Stockport community with the Arthur Sykes Trust. He toured America and Canada in 1884 with his wife Harriet in a well documented piece entitled From England to Sykeston.
